Lent: making it a productive time

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, only two days away.  Forty days and nights on the run up to Easter:

“After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.” Matthew 4:2 NIV

Traditionally it is associated with fasting or more commonly giving something up.  But this year I’m going to start doing something constructive.

Each time post on this blog I typically write between 200 and 500 words.  Now, I’m a final year student; if I were to write just 200 words a day on my 8000 word dissertation: I would finish it in forty days, from scratch.  Forty days of Lent, forty days of dissertation writing.  Perfect!

And the best thing is, Sundays don’t count.  So it wouldn’t even have to be everyday!  (Do the maths, you’ll realise that you can eat that chocolate you’ve given up on Sundays during Lent, it’s a win-win situation!)

Easter Sunday is on the eighth of April this year (day before my mum’s birthday), and the hand in date isn’t until the fourth of May: plenty of time to tweak and re-draft.

University is almost over, I want to get a good degree and make Sweetcorn proud.  Fingers crossed?  I think we make our own luck when it comes to something like this.

First off though: it’s Shrove Tuesday tomorrow and I’m looking forward to celebrating with pancakes and a few friends.  Next stop:  Good Friday and hot-cross buns!

What are you giving up or taking up this year?
